Description

Experience the classic flavors of the South with this Authentic Southern Shrimp and Grits recipe. Creamy stone-ground grits cooked in flavorful chicken broth are topped with sautéed fresh shrimp seasoned with smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Finished with sharp cheddar cheese and fresh herbs, this dish is a comforting and hearty meal perfect for any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale

Grits

  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

Shrimp

  • 1 lb fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Garnish

  • Green onions, chopped
  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Cook the grits: In a medium pot, bring 4 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Gradually whisk in 1 cup of stone-ground grits to prevent lumps. Reduce the heat to low and let the grits simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until they become creamy and tender.
  2. Finish the grits: Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese into the hot grits. Continue stirring until the butter and cheese are fully melted and incorporated, creating a rich and creamy texture.
  3. Sauté the aromatics: While the grits cook, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté them until they become translucent and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Season with smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Cook the shrimp for 3-4 minutes until they turn pink and opaque, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  5. Plate and garnish: Spoon the creamy grits onto serving plates. Top each portion with the sautéed shrimp mixture. Garnish with freshly chopped green onions and parsley to add color and fresh flavor before serving.

Notes

  • Use stone-ground grits for the most authentic texture and flavor; quick or instant grits won’t yield the same creamy consistency.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper to your spice preference, starting with less if you prefer milder heat.
  • If you prefer richer grits, you can substitute some chicken broth with milk or cream.
  • For a smokier flavor, consider adding a few dashes of hot sauce or using smoked paprika liberally.
  • Ensure shrimp is fresh or properly thawed for best taste and texture.
