Description

This comforting Bowtie Pasta Ziti combines al dente bowtie pasta with a savory meat sauce, creamy ricotta, and melts of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, baked to bubbly perfection. A family-friendly dish perfect for weeknight dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 12 oz bowtie pasta (farfalle)

Meat Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Cheeses

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese

Garnish

  • Fresh basil, chopped

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the bowtie pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente, according to the package instructions. Drain the pasta well and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat from the skillet. Add marinara sauce, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper to the meat. Stir and let it simmer gently for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Assemble the Dish: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the prepared meat sauce, ensuring the pasta is evenly coated. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread half of the pasta mixture in the dish, then dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese evenly over the pasta. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Add the remaining pasta mixture on top, then top with the remaining mozzarella and the grated Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for another 10 minutes, or until the cheese on top is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
  5. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped basil before serving. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for ground beef for a leaner option.
  • For extra flavor, add some chopped onions or bell peppers to the meat sauce.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, omit the meat and use sautéed mushrooms or lentils instead.
  • Use fresh herbs instead of dried if available, adjusting amounts to taste.
  • Make sure to not overcook the pasta initially, as it will continue cooking in the oven.
