Description

Garlic Parmesan Scalloped Potatoes is a creamy, cheesy baked dish featuring thinly sliced Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes layered with a rich garlic-infused cream sauce and fresh Parmesan cheese. This comforting side pairs perfectly with roasted meats or a hearty salad for a classic, crowd-pleasing meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 large Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes (about 2 ½ pounds)

Cream Sauce

  • 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Topping

  • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Freshly chopped parsley or chives (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray and set it aside to prepare for layering.
  2. Make the Garlic Cream Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, all-purpose flour, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper until smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  3. Slice the Potatoes: Peel the potatoes thoroughly and rinse them under cold water. Using a mandolin slicer or sharp knife, slice the potatoes into very thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick, for even cooking.
  4. Layer Potatoes and Cream Mixture: Spread one-third of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour one-third of the garlic cream mixture evenly over the potatoes. Repeat this layering two more times, finishing with the cream mixture on top.
  5. Add Cheese and Bake Covered: Sprinkle the freshly grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top layer. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil to trap the moisture, and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  6. Finish Baking Uncovered: Carefully remove the foil (be cautious of hot steam) and continue baking the dish for another 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden-brown and bubbly.
  7. Rest and Garnish: Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them stand for 5 minutes to set. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives if desired, then serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use a mandolin slicer for evenly thin potato slices to ensure even cooking.
  • Russet potatoes provide a fluffier texture, while Yukon Golds offer a creamier consistency.
  • Allow the dish to rest after baking to help it firm up for cleaner servings.
  • For extra flavor, you can sprinkle additional Parmesan cheese during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  • Make sure to cover the dish with foil during the initial bake to prevent the cream from drying out.
