Ingredients
Scale
Tuna Salad
- 2 cans (5 oz each) canned tuna, drained
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 stalk celery, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons red onion, finely diced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sandwich Assembly
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- Preheat Panini Press: Preheat your panini press or grill pan over medium heat to ensure it is hot and ready for cooking.
- Prepare Tuna Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, finely chopped celery, diced red onion, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well until the ingredients are evenly incorporated to create a creamy tuna salad.
- Butter the Bread: Lightly butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread. This will help the bread crisp up nicely and develop a golden color when grilled.
- Assemble the Sandwich: On the unbuttered side of four bread slices, layer the tuna mixture evenly, then add a slice of cheddar cheese and tomato slices on top. Cover each with another bread slice, making sure the buttered side faces outwards for grilling.
- Grill the Sandwich: Place the sandwiches in the preheated panini press or grill pan. Cook for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
- Serve: Once done, remove the sandwiches from the heat. Let them cool slightly to set, then slice and serve warm for the best taste and texture experience.
Notes
- You can substitute cheddar with your favorite melting cheese like Swiss or provolone.
- To add a smoky flavor, consider adding a few slices of smoked paprika or chipotle peppers to the tuna mixture.
- For a healthier option, use light mayonnaise or Greek yogurt.
- Make sure not to overfill the sandwiches to prevent them from falling apart during grilling.
- If you don’t have a panini press, a grill pan or skillet can be used with a heavy lid or another pan to press the sandwich.
